It's Sunday morning and I am perusing the Wall Street Journal along with a good cup of coffee.  I come upon this article on opals and moonstones.  I don't know if you've ever seen opals but they are heavenly.  They remind me of looking down to earth from above and seeing water, land, and rock.  They are in blues, greens, yellows and all shades in between.  They are luminous and iridescent - just lovely!

Bangles - The New Arm Candy

The youthful, hip models wear fun, colorful plastic versions with their t-shirts and jeans. Actresses often wear gobs of thin gold or silver on the red carpet.  And the "it" girls and fashionistas go for funky ethnic styles from India and Africa.

Bangle bracelets are a style staple that let a girl play around, have fun and mix it up with her style. They are available in a huge array of precious and nonprecious materials. You can find them at Bloomies or at a street vendor. They can be extremely plain or intricately decorated and adorned.

Bright, bold and chunky, or more classic and traditional. It all depends on your style and mood for the day. Try out different versions.  Mix the wood with the silver and gold. See what works for you and what you love. The vast array of combinations is endless. Your bangles are your bells, announcing your stylish arrival.

The Inside Track: My Favorites

*Enamel Cloisonne Bangles: They come in a variety of designs,
are colorful and are great when stacked together or mixed with other colors.
*Vintage Bangles: If you scour vintage shops, you may be able to score a few unique vintage styles. There are some made of Bakelite produced in the 20's and 30's.
*Wood Bangles: Made of exotic woods such as brazilian cherry. They often come in geometric shapes and have a chunky cool vibe.

Ideas for Wear:

To be bold, wear big chunky designs from wrist to elbow as actresses from the 20's did.
For glamour, wear an armload of thin gold bracelets. You should stick to no less than six. Mix inexpensive and real if you like. You can even go vintage here.
For fun, look for odd colored Bakelite from the flea markets or cheap Indian bangles.
For a little glitz, thin bangles of small pave diamonds add fun and sparkle.

Tidbits on Bakelite

Bakelite is a very rare material that is no longer being produced. It was the precursor to plastic and could be dyed almost any color.
It was used from the 1920's through the 1950's to make all kinds of things. Bakelite jewelry pieces became popular the 1920's and gained momentum as The Depression deepened and buying expensive jewelry was out of the question.
When World War II began, production was halted since factories were used to make war materials only.  By the time the war was over, cheaper plastic had been developed and the golden age of Bakelite had ended.
